Oles Honchar Dnipro National Law University

The Department of European and International Law was established in 1989 as the Departments of History of the State and Law and Political Studies (1989−1997), and International Law and Comparative Jurisprudence (1997−2009). As of March 1, 2018, the department has its current name. It is headed by Doctor of legal Sciences, Professor, Kateryna Berezhna.

The list of specialties (educational-professional and educational-scientific programs) for which the department is a graduate:

Bachelor: Specialty 081 "Law", Master's degree: Specialty 081 "Law", Doctor of Philosophy PhD: Specialty 081 "Law". 

The Department of European and International Law teaches the following disciplines of the main cycle of studies on EU law: Fundamentals of European Union law, Election law of the countries of the European Union, Actual problems of the functioning of EU law, International public law, International private law, International legal regulation of customs cooperation, Theory of international law, International legal cooperation, International humanitarian law, Peaceful settlement of international disputes, Case law, History of the state and the law of Ukraine, History of the state and the law of foreign countries, History of teachings about the state and law, International customs law.

The staff of the department investigate the complex scientific problem "Modern trends of the relationship between International, European and National legal systems and regimes". Based on the results of scientific developments, monographs, articles, training manuals, methodological recommendations are published.

International activity: Within the framework of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Oles Gonchar Dnipro National University and the University of Sussex with the assistance of the USAID Justice for All Program, the Department of European and International Law of the Faculty of Law has started cooperation with the Faculty of Law of the University of Sussex in the sphere of "Law of the European Union". Head of the Department of European and International Law, Professor Kateryna Berezhna, received the status of an Visiting Research Fellow at the Faculty of Law of the University of Sussex for a period of one year. This will contribute to the improvement and expansion of the direction of teaching "EU Law" to students of higher education at DNU, informing stakeholders, which will include integral and consistent knowledge of the EU legal system and mechanisms for the implementation and protection of the rights and legitimate interests of Ukraine as a candidate for EU accession and a future full-fledged a member of the integration association at the EU level. The staff of the department takes part in the implementation of a bilateral agreement between the Faculty of Law of Oles Gonchar Dnipro National University and the University of Bialystok (Bialystok, Poland)

This department is a UACES group member through our collaboration with USAID Justice for All Activity.

The USAID Justice for All Activity (J4A) in collaboration with the University Association for Contemporary European Studies is supporting Ukrainian law schools in their efforts to improve the teaching of EU law to help raise new generations of Ukrainian legal professionals with solid understanding of and skills to apply EU law to advance Ukraine’s integration into the EU. To this end, J4A supports Ukrainian law schools in building bridges with foreign law schools with expertise in EU law for international experience exchange and collaboration. J4A also facilitates the development of a network/community of practice composed of Ukrainian instructors of EU law and seeks to create learning and development opportunities for Ukrainian law schools and their faculty and channel them through such a network/community of practice for greater engagement, closer people-to-people contacts, and continuous improvement.
