JMU's School of Law has a long-standing heritage dating nearly half a century. All of our students, from undergraduates and postgraduates to professionals, receive a first-class education from a team of dedicated academics and practicing legal professionals. The School of Law has a thriving research community and its academic staff are regularly published in legal journals, text books and contribute commentary to the wider media.
Researchers in the School are a vibrant mix of experienced, nationally and internationally-known scholars and younger, more up-and-coming individuals who are engaged in a wide and exciting range of research in law and criminal justice. Researchers in the EU, Public and International Law Cluster in particular focus on such subjects as Global and EU Crime & Security, Terrorism, Governance, European Socio-Legal Studies, Law and Religion, Human Rights, Comparative Law, and German & Italian Public Law. The majority of academic staff are research active and bring their own expertise into the classroom by providing an important critique of the law and criminal justice policy and practice, thus ensuring our students receive the most up-to-date professional training and key insights on the latest developments in these fields. This research informed and driven culture is key to our students' success and offers opportunities for postgraduate and doctoral students to further advance their understanding of the law.
The School is based in the ground-breaking Redmonds Building located in the heart of Liverpool city centre's Knowledge Quarter. As the home of the Faculty of Arts, Professional and Social Studies, the Redmonds building provides a resourceful, comfortable and contemporary business environment for staff, students and visitors with access to state-of-the-art teaching spaces, social learning areas, IT suites, a cafe and lounge area, roof terraces and panoramic views over Liverpool's stunning skyline. The School's Moot room (or mock court room), an exceptional 21st century facility where students can present legal arguments and gain experience in the art of persuasion, also enables the School to build upon its impressive record in prestigious legal competitions, in which teams of students travel the globe to compete and win titles in mooting, negotiation and mediation.
